At EchoBolt, we’ve always believed that creating world-class technology requires more than just writing great code, it requires truly understanding the environment in which our tools are used. That philosophy is exactly why our software engineering team recently completed the GWO Basic Safety Training at the South West Maritime Academy. And according to the team, the experience was nothing short of a “total game-changer.”

Bringing Software Engineers Closer to the Offshore Reality

Our long-term goal is simple: Every member of our software team should be capable of using BoltWave technology in the field on an offshore wind turbine. This training brings us one major step closer.

Over the course of five intensive days, our remote-first engineering team came together for hands-on training that covered the practical realities of offshore work—climbing, working at height, sea survival, first aid, manual handling, and more. Besides skill building, the experience provided a rare and valuable in-person bonding opportunity for a team that usually collaborates virtually.

Understanding the Challenges of the Offshore Environment

Offshore turbines are complex, demanding, and often hazardous work environments. From the very moment a technician approaches a turbine—whether accessing the transition piece or climbing inside the nacelle—every task carries its own challenges.

This is precisely why EchoBolt exists: to minimise the time, cost, and risk associated with unnecessary bolt retightening.

Experiencing even a simulation of these conditions gave our engineers a powerful new lens. The practical elements of GWO training fundamentally reshaped how we think about the user experience of our BoltWave device and app.

Designing BoltWave for Real-World Conditions

When you're standing at the top of a turbine in harsh weather, wearing full PPE, working under time pressure, and managing multiple operational priorities, the last thing you need is temperamental technology a poorly designed app interface or. A fiddly drop-down menu or non-intuitive workflow isn’t just inconvenient—it’s unacceptable.

After this training, our team understands this firsthand. We have a deeper appreciation for the physical and cognitive load offshore technicians face, and we’re more committed than ever to building tools that reduce that load, not add to it.

Our mission is clear: Whatever challenges your offshore rotation throws at you, BoltWave won’t be one of them.

Looking Ahead: The Offshore Experience Awaits

The team is now energised and excited for the next step—heading offshore to experience a real turbine environment. We’re one step closer to aligning software design with real-world offshore conditions, ensuring that BoltWave remains the most intuitive, reliable, technician-friendly bolt monitoring solution in the industry.

And this training? It’s already shaping the next generation of EchoBolt innovation.
